The Association: Super16 is an association of young filmmakers. The name refers to the format, Super 16mm but it also refers to the composition of each class - 8 directors and 8 producers per class. We come from production companies, theatre companies, Danish Universities, advertising companies and other film schools. Super16 is run in our free time. The association was formed in 1999 and has just accepted its sixth class. Membership in the association is for 3 years and includes professional instruction organized by the members themselves. There are no leaders and there is no administration; we run the association ourselves. General guidelines and future plans are discussed at collectively meetings. Furthermore, the members are divided into subgroups in charge of course planning, PR, fundraising, website, etc. The Association’s existential foundation is based on a formally constituted statute.
Our Intentions: The goal of Super16 is to strengthen and develop our talents through coursework and collaboration with the established film industry. We use our shared network to develop the association and to make films. Our jobs are combined with a goal oriented education. In other words, we strive to specialize in the topics we find interesting and relevant for our professional work and careers. We host a steady of flow guest teachers who are paid out of our own pockets or through grants. Every year, we host a public premiere of our fiction and documentary films so that anyone interested in the association or in the work of individual members, has the opportunity to follow what we’re doing. The premieres are always well visited and draw a lot of attention in the industry and in the press – and they are free. Many of our productions also enjoy a festival life both nationally and internationally, including screenings at Berlin Film Festival, Venice, Sundance, Odense, Buster, Nordic Panorama and many more.
Economy: Super16 has Nordisk Film as its main sponsor. We receive no public funding. Any other financing comes from grants, sponsorships and our own personal savings.
Films: The films are collaborative, pairing a director and a producer for a total of 8 films. They are produced with the invaluable help of the film industry and volunteer film folks. During the lifetime of our association, the film industry has made an enormous amount of resources available to us in the form of equipment, editing and post production facilities. Without support from the film industry, Super16 would not exist and we are entirely dependant upon this goodwill. Furthermore, Nordisk Film provides office space so that we can meet and have classes on their lot.
The Future: Every other year, Super16 admits a new class of producers and directors based on CV’s, interviews, previous productions and pitches. Each new class moulds the association according to their own needs and wishes. The new class overlaps the previous class in their final year while they work on their graduation film.
